The surveillance advertising to financial fraud pipeline

Monday (October 2), I'll be in Boise to host an event with VE Schwab. On October 7–8, I'm in Milan to keynote Wired Nextfest.
Being watched sucks. Of all the parenting mistakes I've made, none haunt me more than the times my daughter caught me watching her while she was learning to do something, discovered she was being observed in a vulnerable moment, and abandoned her attempt:
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/blog/2014/may/09/cybersecurity-begins-with-integrity-not-surveillance
It's hard to be your authentic self while you're under surveillance. For that reason alone, the rise and rise of the surveillance industry – an unholy public-private partnership between cops, spooks, and ad-tech scum – is a plague on humanity and a scourge on the Earth:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/16/the-second-best-time-is-now/#the-point-of-a-system-is-what-it-does
But beyond the psychic damage surveillance metes out, there are immediate, concrete ways in which surveillance brings us to harm. Ad-tech follows us into abortion clinics and then sells the info to the cops back home in the forced birth states run by Handmaid's Tale LARPers:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/06/29/no-i-in-uter-us/#egged-on
And even if you have the good fortune to live in a state whose motto isn't "There's no 'I" in uter-US," ad-tech also lets anti-abortion propagandists trick you into visiting fake "clinics" who defraud you into giving birth by running out the clock on terminating your pregnancy:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/15/paid-medical-disinformation/#crisis-pregnancy-centers
The commercial surveillance industry fuels SWATting, where sociopaths who don't like your internet opinions or are steamed because you beat them at Call of Duty trick the cops into thinking that there's an "active shooter" at your house, provoking the kind of American policing autoimmune reaction that can get you killed:
https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/14/us/swatting-sentence-casey-viner/index.html
There's just a lot of ways that compiling deep, nonconsensual, population-scale surveillance dossiers can bring safety and financial harm to the unwilling subjects of our experiment in digital spying. The wave of "business email compromises" (the infosec term for impersonating your boss to you and tricking you into cleaning out the company bank accounts)? They start with spear phishing, a phishing attack that uses personal information – bought from commercial sources or ganked from leaks – to craft a virtual Big Store con:
https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-help-you/safety-resources/scams-and-safety/common-scams-and-crimes/business-email-compromise
It's not just spear-phishers. There are plenty of financial predators who run petty grifts – stock swindles, identity theft, and other petty cons. These scams depend on commercial surveillance, both to target victims (e.g. buying Facebook ads targeting people struggling with medical debt and worried about losing their homes) and to run the con itself (by getting the information needed to pull of a successful identity theft).
In "Consumer Surveillance and Financial Fraud," a new National Bureau of Academic Research paper, a trio of business-school profs – Bo Bian (UBC), Michaela Pagel (WUSTL) and Huan Tang (Wharton) quantify the commercial surveillance industry's relationship to finance crimes:
https://www.nber.org/papers/w31692
The authors take advantage of a time-series of ZIP-code-accurate fraud complaint data from the Consumer Finance Protection Board, supplemented by complaints from the FTC, along with Apple's rollout of App Tracking Transparency, a change to app-based tracking on Apple mobile devices that turned of third-party commercial surveillance unless users explicitly opted into being spied on. More than 96% of Apple users blocked spying:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/96-of-us-users-opt-out-of-app-tracking-in-ios-14-5-analytics-find/
In other words, they were able to see, neighborhood by neighborhood, what happened to financial fraud when users were able to block commercial surveillance.
What happened is, fraud plunged. Deprived of the raw material for committing fraud, criminals were substantially hampered in their ability to steal from internet users.
While this is something that security professionals have understood for years, this study puts some empirical spine into the large corpus of qualitative accounts of the surveillance-to-fraud pipeline.
As the authors note in their conclusion, this analysis is timely. Google has just rolled out a new surveillance system, the deceptively named "Privacy Sandbox," that every Chrome user is being opted in to unless they find and untick three separate preference tickboxes. You should find and untick these boxes:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/09/how-turn-googles-privacy-sandbox-ad-tracking-and-why-you-should
Google has spun, lied and bullied Privacy Sandbox into existence; whenever this program draws enough fire, they rename it (it used to be called FLoC). But as the Apple example showed, no one wants to be spied on – that's why Google makes you find and untick three boxes to opt out of this new form of surveillance.
There is no consensual basis for mass commercial surveillance. The story that "people don't mind ads so long as they're relevant" is a lie. But even if it was true, it wouldn't be enough, because beyond the harms to being our authentic selves that come from the knowledge that we're being observed, surveillance data is a crucial ingredient for all kinds of crime, harassment, and deception.
We can't rely on companies to spy on us responsibly. Apple may have blocked third-party app spying, but they effect nonconsensual, continuous surveillance of every Apple mobile device user, and lie about it:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
That's why we should ban commercial surveillance. We should outlaw surveillance advertising. Period:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/03/ban-online-behavioral-advertising
Contrary to the claims of surveillance profiteers, this wouldn't reduce the income to ad-supported news and other media – it would increase their revenues, by letting them place ads without relying on the surveillance troves assembled by the Google/Meta ad-tech duopoly, who take the majority of ad-revenue:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/05/save-news-we-must-ban-surveillance-advertising
We're 30 years into the commercial surveillance pandemic and Congress still hasn't passed a federal privacy law with a private right of action. But other agencies aren't waiting for Congress. The FTC and DoJ Antitrust Divsision have proposed new merger guidelines that allow regulators to consider privacy harms when companies merge:
https://www.regulations.gov/comment/FTC-2023-0043-1569
Think here of how Google devoured Fitbit and claimed massive troves of extremely personal data, much of which was collected because employers required workers to wear biometric trackers to get the best deal on health care:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/04/google-fitbit-merger-would-cement-googles-data-empire
Companies can't be trusted to collect, retain or use our personal data wisely. The right "balance" here is to simply ban that collection, without an explicit opt-in. The way this should work is that companies can't collect private data unless users hunt down and untick three "don't spy on me" boxes. After all, that's the standard that Google has set.

[ Dante, Paradiso XXIII, v.145 ]

Perchè dietro questa ragazza
[ Angelina Mango ]
c'è una grande STORIA

Sanremo 2007
LAURA VALENTE & PINO MANGO

No. L'amore non è invisibile.

Hello dearest Maggie! Thank you for blessing us both chapter 1 of In The Gloomy Depths, I am so here for the vibes of a Titanic AU and already know I'm gonna be down for Aegon so bad! 💜
I actually have a few questions if you don't mind me asking! First of all, I was wondering how you plot out your stories, in the sense that, are you stories set in stone when you begin writing or do they ever change along the way? Just because I was thinking of your Martyrs polls and how you kept threatening everyone with snakes, so I didn't know if those who selected that option brought about the ending? (No spoilers 🐍🤣)
Secondly, I know you don't fancast your Readers, but do you have any inspiration for the main gal in your new story? Kinda like all the 60s moodboards you used for Io or how you envisioned Chips as a redhead?
And thirdly (and you of course don't have to answer any of the above ahahaha), could I pretty please be added to the tag list? So much loveeeee ❤️
Awww Phoebe my beloved, thank you for reading 🥹🥹 I'm so excited about this fic and I can't wait to show you what happens next!!! It's only 7 chapters, so we'll be moving quickly... 😏😉
My stories are always set in stone in terms of the major plot points, which definitely includes any deaths! So no need to feel guilty, Martyrs was always going to go in that direction, none of the poll participants are responsible 🥰 With that said, there are sometimes minor details of a story that pop up as surprises to me. Some examples would be Fosco baking Io ossi dei morti in Chapter 4 of 1968, or Team Tahoe camping in an RV alongside Lake McConaughy in Chapter 8 of Martyrs. Neither of these details change the overall trajectory of the story, they just flesh out details of characters and settings.
As far as the protagonist for In The Gloomy Depths (she'll have a name soon! 🥰), Galway girls are known for having black hair and blue eyes. I actually spent a week in Ireland while studying abroad in 2014, and I remember the tour guide mentioning it! Below are a few pictures that I associate with our misfortunate heroine:

You can find my Pinterest board for In The Gloomy Depths here!
And finally, of course I'd be delighted to add you to the taglist! Welcome aboard, bestie 🥳🚢💎

OC-Tober 3: Old OC
old oc... seems like a good chance to talk about a long term oc & (former) namesake of my accouts; Jade Embers!
I say former since I changed her last name from Everstone to Embers earlier this year since she's not as representative of me these days. Io's filled the role of 'sona & mascot since.
Left is a recent render, and right I'm pretty sure that's the first colored pic I made of her. Also, even though these were made 8 years apart it's still nice to see how far I've gotten. (and the fact I got a proper scanner years later. The old pic's lineart was taken from a low-res phone pic. How far we've gotten lol)
For those new around here or are just stumbling on my accout, Jade is the laid-back, 'friend-of-everyone' type in my OC cast. She lives in an apartment with her girlfriend Iri, and is one the more outgoing & foolhardy of the two.
Her character & story has changed a lot since I first made her wayyy back in 2014 (damn, nearly 10 years ago). Back when she was still supposed to be a 'sona of mine. Her first backstory was actually a high-fantasy story about meeting up with an evil world destroyer and through her journey reforming them. But I didn't get far with that & just kept her as a regular fursona afterwards.
I don't have art from that version of her story scanned so here's some other ancient Jade art of mine:

Though since then, she's long drifted off from being a 'sona after I started using her as a comic character. To think she went from being a chosen-one fantasy hero to just chilling in an apartment with her GF. I can respect that lol.

Graphic Design Trends (2011–2015) – The Fall of Texture, Rise of Flat
If 2016–2020 was the era of refinement, then 2011–2015 was the disruption phase. Digital design shifted dramatically, moving away from realism toward simplicity and usability. Flat design didn’t just arrive—it stormed in, kicked over the bookshelf, and changed everything.
📱 1. Flat Design Goes Mainstream
The early 2010s brought a rejection of skeuomorphism—the style that mimicked real-world textures (wood, leather, shadows). Apple’s shift from iOS 6 to iOS 7 in 2013 was the watershed moment. Suddenly, icons were flat, colors were bold, and gradients were exiled.
Why it mattered:
Flat design prioritized clarity and speed
It was easier to scale across responsive devices
It looked “modern” and digital-native
Popularized by: Microsoft’s Metro UI and Apple’s iOS 7. Google soon followed with Material Design in 2014 (but that’s more next article).
🎯 2. Focus on UI/UX Simplicity
As mobile apps boomed, user experience became the center of attention. Designers trimmed the fat from interfaces, removing clutter in favor of clean navigation and touch-friendly elements.
Key trends:
Larger buttons
Minimal menus
Icon-based navigation
Mobile-first mindset
Tools like Sketch (launched in 2010) gained traction as designers ditched Photoshop for digital-focused UI work.
🎨 3. Vibrant Colors & Minimal Palettes
This era loved two extremes:
Bright, punchy neons and primary colors (think Windows 8)
Or ultra-minimal color schemes (black, white, grey + 1 accent color)
Color wasn't just for decoration—it was used for hierarchy, feedback, and accessibility.
✍️ 4. Typography Goes Digital-Friendly
Web typography got a serious glow-up in this era:
Web-safe fonts evolved to include open-source options like Google Fonts.
Sans-serif fonts ruled: Helvetica, Open Sans, Lato, and Roboto were in every designer’s toolbox.
Designers used font weight and size creatively to guide user flow—bold headlines, clean body text.
It wasn’t fancy, but it was functional and consistent.
💡 5. Responsive Design Becomes Mandatory
The age of one-size-fits-all websites was over. Enter: responsive design. With the iPhone, iPad, and countless Android devices flooding the market, designers had to think in fluid grids, breakpoints, and scalable elements.
Milestones:
2010: Ethan Marcotte coins “responsive web design”
2011–2015: Every respectable site goes mobile-friendly or dies trying
🧰 6. Designers Shift Tools: Sketch Enters the Scene
Photoshop was great for photo editing. But for UI? It was... clunky. Enter Sketch, a vector-based tool tailored for interface and web design. By 2015, Sketch had become the go-to app for digital designers.
Why it changed the game:
Symbols and shared styles
Pixel-perfect precision
UI kits galore
🖌️ 7. Skeuomorphism Gets the Boot
Remember leather-bound calendar apps and felt-textured Game Centers? Yeah, Apple does too—and regrets it.
From 2013 onward, skeuomorphism was no longer considered “classy.” It was… cringe. Designers embraced flat shapes, simple icons, and clean surfaces.
Fun twist: That old leather calendar? It was actually based on the one in Steve Jobs’s yacht.
🤯 Unique Fact of the Day
When Apple launched iOS 7 with flat icons, it reportedly confused millions of users. The visual leap was so dramatic that many thought their phones had a bug. It sparked hundreds of memes—and a few app redesigns in panic.
🎨 Creative Challenge
Design a mock app dashboard using flat design principles:
No gradients, no shadows
Use bold color blocks
Stick to two fonts max
Keep spacing tight but readable
Extra credit: make it responsive across mobile, tablet, and desktop mockups.

While Apple's new mobile operating system, iOS 8, has been rolling out since Sept. 17, 2014, Google has just announce that its latest operating system, code named Android L, is now released as Android Lollipop 5.0 on 17 October 2014. Both Android and iOS have a large developer community. Android has power of opensource and enormous free learning resources and android programming books available for app developers. Though iOS is not an opensource software it still has strong community support and professional help in terms of learning resource and iOS Programming books readily available for developers. Some developers may be required to do development on both Android and iOS due to a large customer base or other compelling reasons. You must also check our recommended tools for mobile development productivity - Mobile Development Productivity Tools. Even before we start comparing, some of the things you must know about iOS and Android are listed here - iOS app development and Why developers prefer Android . Let us see in this article which platform could emerge as a winner, given that both pose themselves as strong contenders for acceptance in the developer community. What Comes With Android Lollipop 5.0 To begin with, let us take a quick peek at the Android Lollipop 5.0. According to Google’s Blog, Lollipop is designed to be the largest as well as most ambitious release on Android. With it are included over 5,000 new API’s for developers. It offers a completely new UI design that creates a consistent experience across the mobile as well as internet spectrum by offering a new Google-wide standard called material design. Google’s new innovation called material design offers developers elements such as new theme, new widgets for complex views, as well as new APIs for custom shadows and animations. Hence, developers can utilize the material them for a new style for their apps, while system widgets allow them to set their color palette. At the same time, default animations allows for touch feedback as well as activity transitions. It is worthy to note that this new design language is consistent across Android, Google Chrome, Chrome OS as well as Android wear. This design adds animation to everything from tapping the numbers on the phone dialer to sliding apps in as well as out of the screen. Further introduced is a new runtime, within which developers can test their apps and get them ready for ART (Android Runtime), which is the default runtime in the next mobile platform release from Google. Furthermore, Android Lollipop 5.0 offers enhances notifications and the ability to get control over where notifications appear and even how they look. Developers will now be able to sync them to non-handheld devices too. Also, this OS promises increased energy efficiency through Project Volta, which is Google’s effort to make the platform more energy efficient. Developers will thus be able to given more control over resource usage and save energy. Another advantage that Android 5.0 Lollipop has managed to bring is that it presents notifications from your lock screen. Users can answer calls without unlocking phones and notifications can easily be acted upon or dismissed without having to perform routine actions such as swipes or taps. What Comes With IOS 8.0 Next, let us take a quick look at iOS8, which has many new features compared to iOS7. Features as well as functionality take precedence over design in iOS 8. Readers will remember that iOS 8.0 was released with bugs, and Apple had to release an emergency fix to bring back many features that were missing there. Alongside Swift and Apple Pay, which is one of the most popular features of iOS 8, another commended feature of iOS 8 is the Continuity, which as new concept that allows the user to pick off from a device on another device. Continuity allows calling and messages on any devices running iOS 8 and continue web browsing, photo editing, or any other app that the user might be working on.
It also offers support for third party keyboards. Thus, users can utilize keyboards of their choice, if they are not content with the predictive keyboard that Apple has included in its iPhone 6 or iPad devices. Additional features include Spotlight search that has been improved on iOS 8 along with other features such as iMessages, Family Sharing, Health Kit and Home Kit, Wi-Fi Calling, Shazam Integration, Siri, and many other features. So Which OS Will The Developers Prefer? Both Android 5.0 Lollipop as well as iOS 8 brings a lot of improvements as compared to the preceding mobile operating systems. For both the companies involved, it involves a lot of stakes including their reputation. As both these operating systems have been launched at the same time, it will take some time for developers to decide whether they favor either of both of these operating systems for their development needs. Let us examine this aspect in brief. IOS 8 Developer Verdict While examining iOS 8, developers will realize that iOS 8 is tearing down the older foundations and attempting to replace it with a new and friendlier platform. The iOS 8 platform has been thrown open to developers like never before. The iPhone is no more an appliance, but a platform, which the developers can truly exploit for their benefit. Apple has opened up many parts of the iOS 8 that were previously off-limits to third party developers. Now third party developers can develop apps that can integrate into Apple’s sharing system, while replace iPhone’s keyboard or put themselves into Apple’s photos app. Also, widgets can be put into the Today tab or even the Touch ID fingerprint scanner can be used to authenticate the users. Thus, the present version of iOS 8 includes features that were not heard of just a year back. It can be said that Apple has made the biggest change to iOS 8 and how it works, since the launch of the App store in 2008. This makes iOS a friendlier and more useful platform that what users could access before. However, iOS 8 is not entirely without fault. It is full of bugs and at the same time, it is one of the most unpolished versions of iOS in recent years. Already, a number of developers are taking advantage of the new widget functionality in iOS 8’s new widget functionality. However, they have obtained mixed results. Also, third-party keyboard support is present; however, its use ranges from being barely usable to sometimes buggy. Data sharing between some apps is now possible, while the photos app is a huge improvement. Whatever inclusions are present, the full potential of iOS8 still remains to be see, which won’t be visible for weeks or even months after release. Android Lollipop Developer Verdict At present, the Android Lollipop 5.0 is not quite yet the finished product, and Google has warned that the developer build could cause lost data as well as unexpected crashes. However, many developers have reported that they haven’t experienced any crashes or bugs. Conclusion Developers are considering the Android version to be extremely rock solid and it seems that this version will emerge as the favorite amongst developers, although it is too early to say right away! Cara Giovanna,
Milano, 9 marzo 2025
Continua a brillare, a cantare, a ispirare.
